The Light

Let the days do as they will,
Be at peace when destiny decrees.
Do not despair at worldly trials,
For nothing in this world remains.

Stand firm when calamities strike,
Let generosity and loyalty be your traits.
If your faults are many among people,
Cover them with generosity, for it veils all flaws.

Never show humiliation to your enemies,
For their gloating is a great affliction.
Do not expect generosity from the miser,
For in the fire there is no water for the thirsty.

Your provision will not be reduced by delay,
Nor increased by striving beyond measure.
No sorrow lasts, nor joy endures,
No hardship remains, nor ease forever.

If your heart is content,
You and the world are equal.
When death descends, no land or sky can protect,
Though God’s earth is vast, destiny constricts.

So let the days betray you as they wish,
For no remedy can save from death.

دع الأيام تفعل ما تشاءُ *** وطب نفساً إذا حكم القضاءُ
ولا تجزع لحادثة الليالي *** فما لحوادث الدنيا بقاءُ
وكن رجلاً على الأهوال جلداً *** وشيمتك السماحة والوفاءُ
وإن كثرت عيوبك في البرايا *** وسرك أن يكون لها غطاءُ
تستر بالسخاء فكل عيبٍ *** يغطيه كما قيل السخاءُ
ولا تُرِ للأعادي قط ذلاً *** فإن شماتة الأعداء بلاءُ
ولا ترجُ السماحة من بخيلٍ *** فما في النار للظمآن ماءُ
ورزقك ليس ينقصه التأني *** وليس يزيد في الرزق العناءُ
فلا حزنٌ يدوم ولا سرورٌ *** ولا بؤسٌ عليك ولا رخاءُ
إذا ما كنت ذا قلبٍ قنوعٍ *** فأنت ومالك الدنيا سواءُ
ومن نزلت بساحته المنايا *** فلا أرضٌ تقيه ولا سماءُ
وأرضُ الله واسعةٌ ولكن *** إذا نزل القضاءُ ضاق الفضاءُ
دع الأيام تغدر كل حينٍ *** فما يغني عن الموت الدواءُ
