Adam ( عليه السلام) was given two sons- Qabil and Habil, the story below is as narrated in the Quran.
And (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him) recite to them (the Jews) the story of the two sons of Adam (Habil and Qabil) in truth; when each offered a sacrifice (to Allah), it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former: “I will surely kill you.”
The former said: “Verily, Allah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious).” “If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you: for I fear Allah, the Lord of the `Alamin (mankind, jinn, and all that exists).” “Verily, I intend to let you draw my sin on yourself as well as yours, then you will be one of the dwellers of the Fire; and that is the recompense of the Zalimin (polytheists and wrong-doers);”
So the Nafs (self) of the other (latter one) encouraged him and made fair-seeming to him the murder of his brother; he murdered him and became one of the losers; Then Allah sent a crow who scratched the ground to show him to hide the dead body of his brother; He (the murderer) said: “Woe to me! Am I not even able to be as this crow and to hide the dead body of my brother?” Then he became one of those who regretted}. (Al–Ma’idah, 27-31)
The lesson to be learnt here is that of jealousy and how it can manifest in us. Jealousy is the worst and one of the most evil emotions a Muslim can have towards other Muslims. Once jealousy (Hasad) sprouts in a Muslim’s heart, he does not want good for his fellow brothers or sisters.
We should all be content with what Allah has given to other Muslims. Allah says in the Quran, “Allah favored some of you over others with wealth and properties. Do they deny the favors of Allah?” [Quran, Soorah an-Nahl (16): 71] And: “Do they envy men for what Allah has given them of His Bounty?” [Quran, Soorah an-Nisa (4): 54]
Rasool-ul-Allah said, “”Beware of jealousy, for verily it destroys good deeds the way fire destroys wood.” [Abu Dawood]
Ibn Majah reports that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked who are the best of people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “the one with a clean heart and truthful tongue.” They asked: ‘We understand a truthful tongue, but what does a clean heart mean?’ he answered: ‘It is the heart of one that is pious, pure, and is free of sin, transgressions, hatred and Hasad.”
At-Tirmidhee narrated from al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awam that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There has come to you the disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair, but that it shaves (destroys) faith” [(Hasan) Jamee at-Tirmidhee (2434)]
How To Get Rid of Jealousy
The envies of men are so disastrous that Allah provided Muslims with a cure. Allah says in Surah Falak:
Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
From the evil of that which He created
